How to Overcome Negative Self-Talk
Negative Self Talk will single handedly keep you from achieve goals. It is vital that you learn a new way to talk to yourself and overcome the negative self talk.
One of my favorite quotes is – Never say to yourself what you wouldn’t want to hear someone else say about you. I heard this quote and it hit me in the gut and made really think about my negative ‘self-talk’. If someone else said ‘you’re fat’, ‘you’re not good enough’, ‘you can’t do that’, ‘you are a bad mom’, I would want to punch them in the face. Yet…..I will say those things to myself.
Why is Negative Self Talk so Bad?
The cruel things people say to us help shape how we see ourselves. BUT, the things we say to ourselves, are sometimes far worse and also shape our actions. Studies show that the mind will subconsciously interpret what it hears literally. So, what you feed your mind is what you will get back out.
Thoughts affect actions and actions affect reality. The longer we think and say negative self-talk, the more we will believe it. Therefore, the more we believe it, the longer it takes us to achieve positive things.
The Effects of Negative Self Talk
I am a people pleaser and a perfectionist. I have caught myself many times talking myself out of things. Things like starting a business or changing careers. I’ve told myself I’m not good enough, or that I’ll disappoint someone if I fail. And, at home, I often felt like I was failing as a wife and mom.
These negative self-talk are lies. They are not based on any facts. Yet I had them and they created a reality I didn’t like. These negative thoughts caused me to procrastinate and operate out of fear. They held me back in many ways and for many years. Furthermore, I was unhappy living a life I knew I could do better at, yet was paralyzed by the fear the negative self-talk created. I knew I had to create a new reality and overcome the negative self talk.
How Should I Talk to Myself?
The negative self-talk/lies to keep us from being a better version of our self. We start to believe the negative things, and they keep us from being all we were created to be. But, if these are lies, what is the truth? The bible is the best place I know to go to find truth. I did some research about to see what the bible say about who I am?? As a believer it says I am….
LOVED (John 3:16)
REDEEMED (Galations 2:20)
HIS (1 John 3:1) (Isaiah 43:1)
WORTHY (Zephaniah 3:17)
PART OF HIS PLAN and have a PURPOSE (Jeremiah 29:11)
MADE IN HIS IMAGE (Genesis 1:27)
VALUABLE (Luke 16:7) (Matthew 6:25-34)
STRONG (Deuteronomy 31:6)
CAPABLE (Philippians 4:13)
BLESSED (Jeremiah 17:7-8)
Challenge to Overcome Negative Self Talk
Changing negative self-talk is hard to do. It’s a habit and habits take time to create new ones. Recognizing the negativity as its happening is the first big step. Next, prepare yourself and replace the negative thoughts and self-talk with positive alternatives. This will help create positive habits over time.
I challenge you to replace the lies and negative self-talk with truth. Keep truths in front of you everyday by writing them out. Ex: I am LOVED, I am a PART OF HIS PLAN, I am VALUABLE, I am STRONG, I am WORTHY. Write them on notecards and post them on your bathroom mirror, in your car, on the frig, and anywhere else you look often. Say them OUT LOUD to yourself every day, as well as anytime you find yourself thinking or saying the lies. By hearing yourself speaking the truth, it will help you replace the negative beliefs with positive ones.
What other truths can you replace the lies with?
I’ll leave you with these –
You are CAPABLE, You are COURAGEOUS, You are a BLESSING!!
